Israel and Hamas Agree to a Ceasefire Brokered by Egypt and U.S.

Israel and Hamas Agree to a Ceasefire Brokered by Egypt and U.S. United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr announce ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.Egypt, Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012.(AP Photo/Egyptian State Television) After eight days of conflict, Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire.  The conflict began with Israel, citing rockets frequently being fired into southern Israel from Gaza, assassinating the leader of Hamas military wing,  Ahmed Said Khalil al-Jabari. The Israel Defense Forces, or IDF, then posted a ten second video  of the pinpoint strike on YouTube and tweeted the video on their Twitter account, @IDFSpokesperson. In response to this Hamas military wing, Al-Qassam Brigades tweeted back @idfspokesperson  Our blessed hands will reach your leaders and soldiers wherever they are (You Opened Hell Gates on Yourselves). This prompted a war of words to be waged on Twitter alongside the real conflict. As the fighting went on, hope was fading that an escalation into all out ground war could be avoided. President Obama, who, along with Hilary Clinton, was on a diplomatic tour of Asia, was in frequent contact with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and newly elected Egyptian President, Mohammed Morsi, via telephone stressing the importance of  deescalation. It is important to note that the United States did not deal directly with Hamas because Hamas is recognized as a terrorist organization. Instead, Morsi was tasked with dealing directly with Hamas because he is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood party, the  progenitor of the Hamas organization. The first large scale international conflict in the region since the beginning of the Arab Spring, all eyes were on Morsi to see how he would act in such a situation. President Obama had expressed a degree of apprehension about Morsi in September during an interview with telemundo saying  the U.S. would not consider Egypt an ally, but we dont consider them an enemy. On Tuesday, the 20th of November, Secretary of State Clinton left Obama to finish out his diplomatic tour alone so she could fly to the Middle East and help reach some agreement. After a whirlwind of meetings, Clintons shuttle diplomacy payed off and a deal was struck. Both sides called the agreement a victory  with Israel citing elimination of strategic targets and an impressive debut of their Iron Dome missle defense system and Hamas citing assurances of a slackening of the five-year Israeli blockade of Gaza. Tensions between the two countries have not cooled in the slightest. How then was a ceasefire agreement reached so swiftly? Egypts new Muslim Brotherhood President provided a new diplomatic connection to Hamas that had not existed before. Morsi was able to  liaise with Hamas while Clinton spoke with Netanyahu. Clinton and Morsi were then able to work together to finalize the agreement. The ceasefire is only the beginning however. Ceasefires have been made and broken between Israel and Gaza before. If they want a longer lasting peace theyre going to have to come together and talk about their goals and demands. The situation in the Middle East continues to be tenuous despite this ceasefire, with President Morsi giving himself new power over the courts in Egypt.

What You Should Know About Online Classes to Advance Your Career

What You Should Know About Online Classes to Advance Your Career via Pixabay.com What Is An Online Class? Online classes are affordable and convenient alternatives to traditional classes held in a classroom. They are still taught by professors and certified teachers. Except you can learn from home rather than going to campus every day. There are also different variations of how an online class is taught. The structure of the class may be prerecorded videos that you must watch each week or a live video stream at a certain time each week. It may be a hybrid class where you meet with your professor in person once or twice throughout the class. It’s important to find the right one for you to ensure your success in the class. Why Take an Online Course? You’ve already earned your degree, so why take more classes? Haven’t you learned everything you need to know during your four years in college? The answer is no. There is always more to learn, especially when you want to advance your career. There are certain things that they do not teach you in school. For example, if you graduated with a degree in English and want to become a freelance writer, you need to know more than just how to write. You need to learn marketing so you can market yourself to clients. You need to learn how to run a business, which involves bookkeeping, sales, customer relations, and much more. What Kind Of Courses Are There? There are so many online classes out there! When people think of an online class, they may think they are only focused on business skills. That simply isn’t true. You can take an online class in just about anything. There are classes that focus on business skills, computer programming, photography, reading body language, and so many more. When you want to advance your career, don’t focus on only business skills, but also people skills. It never hurts to take a course in reading body language or sales or a foreign language. How to Choose a Class With so many options out there, you may feel overwhelmed when it comes to choosing an online course to take. First, make a list of all the skills you feel you will benefit from to advance your career. Once you have a master list made, it’s time to narrow it down. Ask yourself, which skills are the most important? Which skills will separate you from other job applicants? That is the online class you should take first. Next, if there are skills you would like to learn that require more than one class, start with the basics. You can’t jump into an expert level class without taking the beginner class. Start small and work your way up. What To Expect from Online Classes Online classes greatly differ from a traditional class. You have much more responsibility when it comes to an online class. Rather than making sure you show up to class at a certain time each week and sitting in a classroom, you must carve out time from your schedule to make sure you take your class. Many online classes don’t have certain times that they “meet” online. It is up to you to stick to the schedule, watch the required videos or read the required readings on your own time. Nobody is taking attendance. It’s also important to stay motivated while taking an online class. When there isn’t a teacher who expects to see your face a few times a week, you may lose motivation to attend the class and complete assignments. It’s easy to say, “I’ll do it tomorrow” when taking an online class. Time management is a major skill you will need when taking an online class. There are some classes that will require extensive projects to be done or a number of readings. You may be working full time or have other commitments. Make sure that you can manage your time well so you can complete assignments, study, and “attend” class. How to Prepare for an Online Class Nobody likes going to a class unprepared. The same thing goes for an online class. Before your online classes begin, become familiar with the website and platform where you will be learning. Buy any required textbooks or supplies that are required for the course. It’s also important to make a space in your home where you will complete your online class. As you advance your career, it’s essential that your study space is productive and free from distractions. Make yourself a schedule to stick to. If your class doesn’t have a required time to meet during the week, it is on you to make sure all of the videos and readings have been completed and assignments are done on time. Set aside certain days and times to work on your class before it begins. This way you won’t fall behind. via Pixabay How Much Do They Cost? The benefit of taking online classes to advance your career is that they are much more cost-efficient than taking traditional classes on a campus. There are even some classes that are completely free. Take advantage of these free classes and save yourself hundreds or even thousands of dollars while receiving the same information and skills. If you decide to take an online class through a college, you may be eligible for financial aid. That already low-cost class is now even more affordable! Don’t let yourself be discouraged from learning because of a price tag. When Should You Take Them? Depending on the online class, you can take them at any time. Some classes do have specific dates when they start and end, especially if you choose to take them through a university. Others are self-guided and you can start, pause, or end them at any time. Recent college graduates should definitely take advantage of online classes to advance your career early on. While you have some time off and are on the job hunt, it’s a great way to fill your time and build up your resume. If you are thinking of changing careers or want to apply for a promotion, start taking online courses a few months before you plan to apply. There are plenty of classes that mid-career professionals can take to make them stand out. Since technology is always changing, it’s important to keep up with it and stay relevant. How Online Classes Advance Your Career How exactly do online classes advance your career? There are a few ways, actually. One is that they teach you certain and essential skills that you did not learn in school. You may find after going on interviews that there are certain programs or topics that you should know but don’t. Another way is that they separate you from other job applicants. If you have a long list of online classes that are relevant to the position you are applying, it makes you a more qualified candidate compared to someone who solely has a degree. It also speaks to what kind of person you are. If you are willing to take online classes after graduating from college, it shows a potential employer that you enjoy learning and are willing to learn. This is an important quality to have when being considered for an open position. How Do You Add Online Courses to Your Resume? When you want to advance your career, you must send out your resume. There is always some confusion when it comes to writing and putting together a resume. There are certain formats and words that you should use. There’s also certain information that should be left out. When it comes to listing the online courses you’ve completed on your resume, it can get a little tricky. The best way to list them is to make a separate section for them at the bottom of your resume. You can replace your “Skills” section with “Relevant Courses.” Here, you can list which courses you have completed and where you completed them. It’s important to keep these courses relevant to the position you are applying for. You may have taken 20 online classes, but only five of them are relevant. It’s also good practice to skip the intro classes you’ve taken. An employer will be more impressed that you took a higher level class than an intro class. If you take an online course that awards you a certificate at the end, make sure to add it to your LinkedIn profile. This will allow employers to see that you did, in fact, take the course and passed it. Infographic by Brittany Loeffler What Are the Benefits of Taking an Online Class? As you know, college graduates rarely work in the field they majored in. That being said, online classes are extremely beneficial to working the job you want. Since you did not major in your preferred job, you will need to do some extra learning if you want to advance your career. That’s where online classes come in. If you decide that you don’t want to work for “the man” and start your own business, online classes are a great place to start. Being an entrepreneur means always learning and having many different skills. Start your business, big or small, with a few online business courses. Some essential courses to take are marketing, project management, general business, and accounting. Though online classes are a big commitment, they make it easier to learn new things because you can do it from home. The classes available aren’t limited depending on where you live or which university you attend. You can sit in your pajamas and learn new skills that will advance your career right from your bed! Online Classes Aren’t An Easy “A” There is a common misconception about online classes being easier than traditional classes. Just because you can sit at home and take a class doesn’t mean that it is any easier than sitting in a classroom. In fact, it can be harder because you have more responsibility. You are solely responsible for learning the material and getting assignments done. However, if you want to advance your career, it’s important to stay motivated and dedicated when taking online classes. Always Keep Learning It’s a good habit to always keep learning. Just because you earned your degree does not mean you know everything there is to know about your major. It’s impossible to learn everything there is to know in just a few years. Throughout your life, you must be willing to learn new things, especially when you want to advance your career. Whether it’s learning new computer programs, graphic design, photography, people-skills, or bartending, you should always be learning. With each new skill you learn, the more interesting you become. What Are You Waiting For? So, what are you waiting for? You know you want to advance your career, but may not know where to start. Online classes are the way to go! They are more affordable than going to graduate school and convenient. You can take them while also working full time. Taking online classes can make you stand out from other job applicants. It shows employers that you take initiative and learn on your own. Though they do require a big commitment and tons of dedication, they are helpful and essential when building your skillset. The more online classes you take, the more qualified you will be, which means you will eventually land your dream job. Start advancing your career today with online classes!

How to Play Rockabilly Guitar 7 Easy Songs for Beginners

How to Play Rockabilly Guitar 7 Easy Songs for Beginners Megan L. Ready to learn about rock and rolls cousin from the south? If so, youre in the right place! In this article, music teacher Christopher S.  explores some of the most influential rockabilly songs of our time  and shows you how to play them on guitar The History of Rockabilly The rock  and roll style, dubbed rockabilly, is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music. It dates back to the early 1950’s and comes from the good ol USA, especially from the south. Its a blend of sounds from Western musical styles  like country, sometimes bluegrass styles, and that of rhythm and blues. The  style’s name in itself comes from the combination of “rock” (from the 1950s) and  â€œhillbilly” music, a common term being used to describe country music of the 40s  and 50s. This style was very important for the development of rock and roll music, and it was the  basis and influence of many famous bands from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. It was a style which was, in a sense, a rite of passage to play if you wanted to  play rock and roll. The styles defining features include strong rhythms, vocal twangs, and often the use of tape echo. It also tends to have fast lyrics and distorted  guitars, which gives it a progressive feel, thus attractibg the ears of young  listeners. Notable Rockabilly Players The first major artists to be associated playing rockabilly music were  Bill Haley, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Bob Luman, and Jerry Lee  Lewis. The style started a legacy of rock and roll which spawned a variety of sub-styles  and influencing styles such as punk rock. If you want to play rock  and  roll  the way famous guitarists such as Jimi Page, Jeff Beck, and Jimi Hendrix did, then you  have to learn, at minimum, the basics and some songs by the very first rock  and  rollers who  played rockabilly. Here are seven  rockabilly songs that are easy to learn and  will teach you how to play rockabilly guitar. 1) Hello Mary Lou by Ricky Nelson This song was recorded and released in 1961 in California. Although its  one of the later  and poppier songs in our timeline of rockabilly music, this song is  easy to play on the guitar and makes for a good intro to the musical style. Below is a guitar tab showing  how to play it. You’ll notice most of the song is played with  chords. You just have to get that good country guitar rhythm down, and then theres a short but sweet solo to learn. 2) Be-Bop-A-Lula by Gene Vincent and His Blue Caps This song is a classic and probably one of the slower tunes of the rockabilly  scene. It has a very swampy but typical singing style with country-influenced  twangy guitar sounds. Below is the chord chart for the song. The strumming is a very simple  down strum on the beat of a 4/4 rhythm. Its a very easy song to learn because of its  slow tempo. 3) Train Kept A-Rollin’ by Johnny Burnette and The Rock and Roll Trio This is a great song because it  really shows the rebellious side of the rockabilly sound  and its true roots as the precursor to rock and  roll. It begins with a rockin’ guitar  lick and strummed  chords with the rumbling sound and rhythm  of a train. This song was considered almost a rite of passage for bands to play  in the 70s and 80s. The well-known band The Yardbirds, with guitarists Jeff Beck  and Jimmy Page, also made this song well-known in the late 60s. The easy part about this song is that you can almost get away with playing  the chords by using only the top and the bottom string.  Below is the intro riff and the chord charts. 4) Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On by Jerry Lee Lewis This is another great tune that was a hit in 1957. The song acutely has its compositional origins from a pianist and club owner named Dave “Curlee” Williams however, Lewis had been performing it and he released it on his recording session for Sun Records which made it hit the Billboard magazine charts. The chords are played with piano but there are guitar licks and chord figures strumming throughout.  Below are the tabs for the guitar parts. 5) Blue Suede Shoes by Carl Perkins This is a very well-known rockabilly song released in 1955, made infamous  by the one and only, Elvis Presley. It was released only a year after the Carl Perkins version. This song is very easy to play because its mostly stop and go chords. It has a driving bluesy rhythm, which is easy to strum. Below  are the chords to Elvis Presley’s version of the song. This would be a good version to learn because its the one that most people will recognize. 6) Ooby Dooby by Roy Orbison This is yet another classic, well-known tune by a classic artist. This song was released again by Sun Records. It has a swampy blues rhythm and sounds great at both slow and faster tempos. Roy was even known to perform this song at various tempos. The original has some great rockabilly licks that, if youre learning this style of guitar, theyre essential licks to learn! Below are the tabs for this song. 7) Twenty Flight Rock by Eddie Cochran This is a comical song which was actually released in the comedy film titled The Girl Can’t Help It in 1956. Its a song about a man who is complaining about seeing his girlfriend who lives on the 20th floor of an apartment build with no elevator. Its a very cool song and actually was the song that got Paul McCartney into the Beatles. McCartney retells the story of how, at the auditions to enter the Beatles, he played that song and John was so impressed that he actually knew all the words to Twenty Flight Rock that he got the spot. Either way its a great song to learn when learning the rockabilly genre. Below are the tabs for this one. So whether youre just starting to learn the guitar or youre already a skilled guitarist, I hope these songs will get you strumming and picking away at the rockabilly music that came from the 50s and 60s. Learn to play them all and you will see your rock playing improve tenfold! Let’s rock again now! Are there any other rockabilly songs youd like to learn how to play on guitar? Hittin the Road with Your Band 7 Must-Read Tips

Hittin the Road with Your Band 7 Must-Read Tips Suzy S. Were stoked to hear that the Red Hot Chili Peppers have announced an upcoming U.S. tour especially since they havent hit the road here since 2007.   So far just six cities have been released, kicking off in Charlotte, NC, on January 25th will you be part of the crowd? If youre in a band yourself, touring is a great way to get your name out there and of course, do what you love best play music!   But its also something that takes a lot of planning.   Take a look at these 7 essential tips to consider before planning your tour!: 1. Make sure you have written at least one album. Not a couple of songs, an entire album; youll need a lot of songs for your shows. Plan on having enough material to play a 45 minute to hour-long set, plus one or two encore numbers (think positive you want those encores!). 2. Save up money for a few months. Each person should have enough money to pay for his/her own food on the tour and the band should have some money to get started off with you will need gas for the van, some upkeep money for oil, transmission, brake fluids, etc., and sundry money for sundry needs maybe one of you will get a cold, and need some NyQuil or something. Its best to be prepared with more than you think youll need. 3. Come up with a route or plan for your tour. Plan which town/city you would like to play on which days. Try to plot a route that makes sense, i.e., try to make a circle rather than playing in one city one day, traveling 150 miles to the next city the next day, and then doubling back to play back in that same starting city the day after that! Instead, try to book two shows in City #1, a day apart, and then travel on to City #2, 150 miles away. Make sure all of your band members are available during the entire time allotted. 4. Search for contacts in each city you hope to play in. The best contacts are local bands that play in the area and venues. Send the band/venue/promoters in each city a message asking them to check out your band and let them know that you are interested in playing a show with them/at their venue on such and such day. You cant always get a show on the day you are looking for and sometimes have to change your route or find a different venue to play at.   Of course, make sure you arent playing on a night when another, bigger band is in the same town. (i.e. If you are an AC/DC tribute band dont play in Denver on the same night that AC/DC is in Denver, because no one will go to your show). 5. Write up a contract for promoters and venues. You dont need to hire a lawyer to write it up, just use common sense. Make a form with spaces for venue name, address, phone number, load-in time, sound check time, show time, and pay. This works both as a means of making sure you do not get screwed over, and also is useful as an itinerary. That way you have a contact sheet for every show and know when you need to be there, and other important information.   Send these contracts through e-mail or regular U.S. Mail to each venue or promoter you have arranged a show with. Have them fill it out and send it back. Keep all of the forms they send back for use as an itinerary and also to make sure things go the way they were agreed on. 6. Make up a flyer for each of the shows with the venue name, show date, address and what bands are playing as well as start time and send them to the venues/band/promoters you are playing with. Sometimes promoters or other bands do this for you and send the flyer to you. Either way, make sure it is up on your MySpace and website, if you have one. If youll be playing a large number of dates, you may want to make a template poster with a big blank spot to write in the date, time, location, and cover. Make sure your website is on the flyer, so you dont have to write it out. 7. Get merch made and CDs pressed. If you only have a demo or a three song EP you can still get them pressed and labeled packaged inexpensively. You can also do it yourself; it doesnt really matter, just as long as you have them available to sell/give out on tour. If someone hears your band and likes it but cant get a CD, odds are they will not remember you. Make sure to include your band name, a track listing and a website/MySpace URL so that they can find you online. Start planning these things and youll make some great headway on organizing your bands tour.   However, you may also want to keep one thing in mind: Plan for making zero dollars. Most bands just starting out are lucky to just get a gig with a bigger name band they rarely get paid. You do it for exposure (to get your music out there) and because you love it not because you have to make a lot of money doing it.   But keep doing what you love and who knows?   Maybe RHCP will open for YOU someday! Area of A Cube

Area of A Cube Cube is a 3-dimensional geometric figure with six congruent sides. A cube is considered as a 3-dimensional geometric shape because it consists of length, width and height. However in a cube, the length, the width and the height are all equal to each other and hence it has 6 congruent sides. Area of a cube is the sum of areas of all the 6 surfaces of the cube. Example 1: Find the total surface area of the cube if a side of the cube is 7m. Given the side length of the cube, s = 7m Every side in a cube is of equal length. Since its a 3-dimensional geometric shape, it has 6 surfaces where every surface is a square of equal sides. Hence area of each surface = (side length) 2 Area of each surface = (7m) 2 = 49m2 There are 6 surfaces in a cube, hence = 6 * s2 = 6 * 49m2 = 294m2 Hence the total surface area of the cube = 294m2 Example 2: Find the total surface area of the cube if the side length of the cube is 12cm. Given the side length of the cube, s = 12cm Every side in a cube is of equal length. Since its a 3-dimensional geometric shape, it has 6 surfaces where every surface is a square of equal sides. Hence the total surface area of the cube, A = 6 * s2 Total surface area of the cube is 6 * (12cm) 2 = 864cm2 Hence the total surface area of the cube = 864cm2
